Why The Employability Conference Campus Tour
Employability is a crucial concern in Nigeria. Many graduates face challenges transitioning from academia to the workforce due to a lack of practical skills, career guidance, and industry exposure, among other factors. Some statistics on university graduates unemployment in Nigeria shows:
- 58.9% of HND graduates are unemployed, 49.55% of OND graduates are unemployed, and 39.75% of BSc holders are unemployed
- The percentage of unemployed Nigerians with advanced education was 13.69% in 2016 and 15.3% in 2019
- About 2.9 million of Nigeria’s unemployed hold graduate and postgraduate degrees.
- There are about 25 million unemployed graduates in Nigeria.
- In the fourth quarter of 2020, the unemployment rate in Nigeria reached 17.5 percent.
- The combined number of employed and unemployed Nigerians with tertiary education is 40.1 million, and 14.6 million are formally employed.
These statistics suggest that unemployment is a significant issue for university graduates in Nigeria. There is a low or zero absence of employability skills as required by employers, which is one of the highest contributors to graduates’ unemployment and underemployment.
